The Carcassonne Castle, in southern France, comprises one of Europe’s best preserved medieval towns. Additionally, it is the largest walled city in the whole of Europe. Within these age old walls you will find a castle, a Gothic-Romanesque basilica, a theatre and tons of art and crafts shops. In fact, I had the privilege of staying in a hostel within the castle (yeah, I used to stay in hostels). Though the place is outstandingly beautiful, it seems more of a museum than a real city. Everything is tourist oriented and of course pricey. Fortunately, the atmosphere is quite different out of the walls. There are coffee houses, local people and a not so franchise vibe. Thus, for a real experience do not forget to check both parts of Carcassonne!
