Valletta – The Best Place to Stay in Malta
We have been to Malta several times, both in winter and summer. Every time we wondered, where is the best place to stay in Malta? We have a clear winner! Valletta is our definite favorite. We are talking about one of the most beautiful cities in the world. No wonder UNESCO included the entire city in its World Heritage Site List. Valletta is a must in your Malta itinerary.
In addition, since the city is in the heart of the country, you’ll be able to go everywhere in no time. Deciding where to stay in Valletta is not that hard. With an area of 0.67 sq km (0.25 square miles), the city is the smallest capital in the European Union. Therefore, wherever you stay, you’ll be within walking distance of every attraction. We have selected the best hotels in Valletta just for you!
The Domus Zamittello Hotel is our favorite in Valletta. The hotel is a meticulously refurbished 17th century palace in the heart of Valletta. However, it is quiet and peaceful. The interior is as grand as the exterior, with original fixtures and furniture. The rooms are big, elegant, and come with modern-day conveniences. The views from its 3rd-floor terrace are some of the best on the island.
The Barrister Hotel
If you are looking for comfort, location, and great views, book a room at The Barrister Hotel. The hotel is a couple of blocks from the port and the castle. The rooms and bathrooms are pleasantly big. For extra class, book a room with a classical Maltese balcony. Now, if you want to splurge, get a deluxe double room with a rooftop terrace and your own hot tub!
Three Cities – The Best Place to Stay for Couples
The best place to stay in Malta for couples is in the area known as the three cities: Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua. The three cities occupy two small peninsulas in front of Valletta, south of the Grand Harbor. We love it because of its unbelievable views of Valletta and the fort. Besides, for such a small area, it packs incredible historic architecture.
Due to their location, Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua are connected to the entire island. In fact, you can travel to the capital and other cities by boat! That to us is as romantic as it gets. Finally, there are fewer tourists in the three cities than in Valletta. Especially at night, when day tourists leave and you can walk admiring this beauty with your significant other (others).
Casa Birmula Hotel
Our favorite hotel is in the heart of the three cities. Casa Birmula Hotel is a 17th century building with only 11 rooms just steps from the Bormla Waterfront gardens. Each room is different and super comfortable. There’s a pool on the rooftop terrace with unobstructed views of the harbor. A local family runs Casa Birmula, providing impeccable service.
BOCO Boutique Hotel
The BOCO Boutique Hotel is a historic building in the center of Cospicua. It’s a well-maintained small building with loads of character. The hotel has only 6 rooms so be sure to book in advance. As you can imagine, the service is classy and personalized. All the rooms are fantastic. The homemade complimentary breakfast is absolutely delish and the rooftop terrace has a hot tub.
Sliema – The Best Place to Stay for Shopping
Sliema has it all! Due to its location in the center of Malta, it is one of the best places where to stay. Besides, the best urban beaches in Malta are here too. The neighborhood is next to St. Julian, where the nightlife is. Thus, you can go to the beach during the day and dance the night away walking from your hotel. Though you can walk to Valetta, it’s better to take the boat.
We like Sliema because it combines the old and the new. Some of the coolest contemporary architecture on the island is here. In fact, if you are into shopping, you have to go to The Point, a modern fancy mall. One of the best things to do in Sliema is to walk along the sea promenade admiring the views.
1926 Hotel and Spa
Our favorite hotel in Sliema is the one and only 1926 Hotel and Spa. The pool on the rocks next to the sea is the best in the entire archipelago. The Beach Club is 200 m from the hotel. But that’s not all. The 1926 has an incredible spa with a sauna, heated pool, and steam room. The rooms are big, well-appointed, and come with a balcony.
Mr. Todd Hotel
If you are looking for a great hotel loved by its guests, book a room at Mr. Todd Hotel. It has probably the best price-quality ratio. The hotel is in the heart of all the action but on a quiet side street. Thus, you’ll be surrounded by restaurants and shops, while enjoying your peace of mind. The rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable.
St. Julian – The Best Place to Stay for Nightlife
St. Julian is the best place to stay in Malta for party. Most of the bars are north of Spinola Garden, around Triq Ball Street. The nightclubs are around St. George Street. Locals call the area Paceville or Malta’s Sin City. We are not here to judge but to tell you that Paceville has some of the wildest parties in the Mediterranean.
However, St. Julian offers more than nightlife. St. George beach is to the north of the neighborhood. It’s a small pebbled cove where you can swim. Another popular attraction is Portomaso Bay, lined with luxury boutiques. You can walk along the marina from Spinola Bay all the way to Portomaso Casino admiring the views.
123 MAINSTREET boutique hotel
The 123 MAINSTREET boutique hotel is on St. Julian’s main street, meters from the Love Monument. Hence, you’ll be able to sleep peacefully while being literally a step away from all the bars and clubs. It’s a contemporary building with modern-day conveniences. Though most rooms have a balcony, the ones on the top floors have the best views. The breakfast is served on a terrace overlooking the sea.
H Hotel and Spa
H Hotel and Spa, and its sister next door, Hugo Hotel and Spa, are the only adult-only hotels in Malta. The contemporary buildings are in the heart of the party area. The rooms are big, perfectly isolated, and luxurious. Book a room with a balcony for views or, better still, a suite with your own hot tub overlooking the sea.
Gzira – The Best Place to Stay for the Views
Gzira is a small neighborhood south of Sliema and northwest of Valetta. Fort Manuel Island is part of Gzira. Actually, Gzira means island in Maltese. To reach the incredible fortress that occupies most of the island, all you have to do is cross a small bridge and walk along Triq Forte Manoel street. The views from the fort will take your breath away.
The area used to be a working-class suburb but is now as fancy as it gets. The area boomed, especially in the past decade. Today, contemporary towers line the seaside promenade. The rich and famous park their yachts in the marina in front. We like Gzira because of the views of Valetta behind St. Manoel Fortress. Valetta’s walls shine at night!
Azur Hotel by ST Hotels
If you stay at The Azur Hotel by ST Hotels, you can access one of the best pools in the archipelago. We are talking about Aqualuna, a beachfront club with sunbeds, a bar, and the coolest atmosphere in Malta. The rooms are big and come with a balcony. There is also a spa. Since the hotel is a block from the main road, it’s very quiet.
115 The Strand Hotel
The 115 The Strand Hotel is a tall contemporary tower on the seaside promenade. Hence, it offers incredible views of Valetta, Manoel Island, and beyond. The best rooms are big and have a balcony overlooking the sea. The hotel features a rooftop executive terrace, a spa with a sauna, and a hot tub. There is a restaurant and a bar. Guests can also access Aqualuna, in front of the hotel.
Marsaxlokk – The Best Place to Stay for Authenticity
Marsaxlokk is a cute little fishing port on the southeastern coast of Malta. Though it’s only some 13 kilometers from Valetta, it’s an oasis of peace. Nothing has changed much in Marsaxlokk over the past decades. Local people from the rest of Malta visit the port for its vibe and character. To us, it’s the best location to stay in Malta if you want an authentic experience.
Some of the best hiking routes in Malta begin in Marsaxlokk. Since there aren’t many big buildings on the coast, you get to walk through nature. From the center of town, walk west along the coast to Saint Lucian Tower. The walk to the east is longer and takes you to Fort Delimara, Kalanka Lighthouse, St. Peter’s Pool, and the incredible coves of Bay Beach.
The Duncan Guesthouse is a couple of meters from the port. The hotel opened in 1897 and has been managed by the same family ever since. You can’t get a more authentic experience! Every room has a kitchenette, with a microwave and fridge. If you don’t feel like cooking, the onsite restaurant offers delicious local food. The superior rooms have sea views!
South Wind Guesthouse
If you are looking for privacy and well-appointed rooms, book one in the South Wind Guesthouse. The hotel is half a block from the sea promenade and offers 8 rooms with a kettle, fridge, and a desk. It has a lift and a dining room where breakfast is served. The top-floor studio is amazing. It has a private terrace offering epic views.
Mdina and Rabat – The Best Place to Stay with Family
Rabat and Mdina are next to each other, some 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the coast. Both towns pack some of the best architecture in Malta. The area’s history dates back to the Bronze Age. In addition, both places were important in early Christianity. Today, you can visit ruins from Roman times, incredible temples, catacombs, and medieval and baroque architecture.
Mdina used to be the capital of Malta until the middle ages. Locals call it Citta Vecchia, the Old City in Italian. The entire town is still inside its impressive walls. The views from the fortress are memorable. Rabat is famous for its catacombs and churches. Since it’s a lovely town favored by the local population, you get to experience the real Malta.
MYN in Rabat
The best hotel in Rabat is the MYN in Rabat. We love it! It spreads over two authentic properties, Arcadia and Zondadari. Arcadia has 8 luxurious rooms. The superior room is huge, classy, and has a private terrace with views. Zondadari is a traditional Maltese house refurbished to include modern-day conveniences. It’s where to stay in Malta with family. You and your loved ones will never forget it.
The Xara Palace Relais and Chateux
There is only one hotel in Medina, and it’s one of the best 5 star hotels in the whole of Malta. The Xara Palace Relais and Chateaux is an incredible palace from the 17th century within the city walls. The property has only 17 lavish rooms. As you can imagine, the service is personalized. The onsite restaurant is one of the best in Malta.
Mellieha – The Best Place to Stay in Malta for Beaches
Mellieha is where to stay in Malta for beaches. It’s on the northern coast of the island, in front of Gozo. The best beaches in Malta are here! We are talking about Golden Beach, Ras II Wahx, Mellieha Beach Bay, Slugs Bay, Ghadira Bay, and Imgiebah Beach. As you can imagine, the best beach resorts in Malta are here too.
In addition, Mellieha homes incredible architecture. Ancient forts dot the area. These were built to protect Malta from invaders. Several imposing forts, towers, and batteries have survived until today. Our favorite is Saint Agatha’s Tower from 1649. But that’s not all. Mellieha has a couple of protected natural areas perfect for hikes. If you like nature, stay in Mellieha!
LABRANDA Riviera Hotel & Spa
The LABRANDA Riviera Hotel & Spa is a seafront property on Marfa Bay. In addition, the hotel has 2 huge seawater pools. Every single of its big and comfortable rooms has a balcony. The ones with a sea view are bigger, and you can see the islands in front. The hotel offers diving courses. It has three restaurants, a full-size spa, and a gym.
Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands
If you are like us, you have to stay as close to the beach as possible. The Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands is the only hotel directly on the beach! Located next to Golden Sands beach, it has a private sandy beach with sunbeds and umbrellas. The hotel features two gorgeous pools and a luxurious spa. Without a doubt, this is one of the best beach resorts in Malta.
Victoria – The Best Place to Stay in Gozo
Gozo is the second-largest island in the archipelago. Since it’s less developed than its biggest sister, it has a rural feel. Gozo is all about nature. The island has been inhabited for thousands of years. Sicilians, Romans, Carthaginians, Ottomans, and just about everyone has called Gozo home at some point in history. That’s why its architecture is so varied.
Victoria is where to stay in Gozo. Though pretty small even for Malta standards, it homes 20 churches, countless mansions, museums, and the incredible Citadella of Gozo. The atmosphere is both grand and relaxed. Of course, some of the best beaches in Malta are in Gozo too. Our favorites are Hondoq ir-Rummien, Dahlet, and Ramla.
Casa Gemelli Boutique Guesthouse
We love this classy little guesthouse. The lovely mansion from 1897 used to be part of a convent. It’s on Victoria’s fanciest street, Republic Street. Two sisters from an old traditional Maltese family run the Casa Gemelli Boutique Guesthouse. The rooms are big, comfortable, and feature antique furniture. The views of the citadel are stunning! Book a room here to rest and learn about Maltese culture.
The Duke Boutique Hotel
The Duke Boutique Hotel is a mid-size luxury hotel on top of a shopping mall. Hence, the views from its top floor rooms are amazing. These have a private terrace and a hot tub! From the beds to the coffee machine, everything is prime quality at the Duke. The same applies to the service. The attentive staff can organize everything you want, including horseback riding.
How to Get to Malta
The best way to get to Malta is by plane. The island has an international airport with flights from most European cities. Even low-cost carriers offer incredible prices to fly directly to Malta. Evidently, the number of flights increases in the high season. The airport is approximately 16km from Valletta. There are public buses that take you from the airport to the entire island.
You can also travel from Sicily to Malta by boat! Ferries leave from Pozzuelo in southern Sicily and arrive in Valetta 90 minutes later. The journey is an attraction in itself, so be sure to grab a window seat. Once in Malta, you can take public buses everywhere. The best way to travel between Malta, Gozo, and Comino is by ferry. For a memorable experience, take the ferry from Valletta to Sliema and the Three Cities.
We use Ferryhopper to check and buy our tickets across the Mediterranean.
